66th All American Sale—A Smorgasbord of Elite Genetics

There was a little bit of something for everyone at this year’s granddaddy of Jersey sales―the All American Jersey Sale. Among the offering were family members of the reigning National Grand Champion and National Jersey Jug Futurity Winner, along with high-end genomics and descendants of breed matriarchs like “Veronica,” “Circus,” and “Maid.” In all, 40 Jersey breeders from 20 states across the country purchased 57 female lots for an average of $4,831.14 and a gross of $275,375. The 66th event of the series was held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky., on November 4, 2018.

The volume buyer of the day, Sexing Technologies, Navasota, Texas, purchased the high-seller, JX Faria Brothers Mald Scary Terry {4}-ET, for $60,000. Lot 68, the last in the catalog, sold absentia with A.I. interest from ABS Global Inc., Semex and Urus. The two-month-old daughter of JX Faria Brothers Maldini {4}-ET, GJPI +173, hails from the “Dean Smith {1}” cow family developed by consignor Faria Brothers Dairies of Dumas, Texas.

“Terry {4}” ranks #6 for GJPI on the current Herd Register list with an index of +216. She has GPTAs of +1,163M, +89F and +53P. She is +1.3 for Livability, +1.1 for Cow Conception Rate (CCR) and +2.5 for Heifer Conception Rate (HCR). Four of her maternal sisters also ranked on the breed’s top genetic lists on sale day.

Their dam, JX Faria Brothers Avon 281569, ranks #54 for genetic merit on the Generation Count 4-6 list with a GJPI of +190. The daughter of JX Faria Brothers Avon {2}-ET, GJPI +156, is appraised Very Good-86% and has an m.e. of 26,366―1,347―974 on her first lactation. She has numerous maternal sisters ranked for genetic merit and two maternal brothers in A.I., including JX Faria Brothers Rondo {3}-ET, GJPI +196.

The grandam of “Terry {4}”, JX Faria Brothers Hulk Ibrahimovic {2}-ET, Excellent-90%, has a four lactation m.e. average of 28,938―1,565―1,101. The next dam is JX Faria Brothers Action Dean Smith {1}, Excellent-92%. She has nine lactations―seven over 20,000 lbs. milk―and a best record of 7-11 305 29,240 4.5% 1,309 3.5% 1,032 102DCR. She has eight Excellent daughters with records to 29,490 lbs. milk, 1,304 lbs. fat and 1,040 lbs. protein.

Sexing Technologies also placed the final bid on one of two lots to sell for $11,600, the second high price of the day. Cataloged at the opposite end of the catalog as Lot 1, Valsigna Viceroy 31654, the daughter of CDF Viceroy-ET, GJPI +197, sold due to sexed Ahlem Regency Princeton-ET, GJPI +157, in mid-April, with A.I. interest expressed by ABS Global, CRV, Semex and Urus.

She ranks on the current Herd Register list for genetic merit with a GJPI of +192. She is +5.1 for Productive Life, +2.3 for CCR and +3.8 for HCR. Her dam, sired by All Lynns Valentino Marvel, GJPI +103, has a projected m.e. of 18,955―944―675 on her first lactation.

Her Very Good-82% grandam has four records―three over 23,000 lbs. milk―and a best record of 5-1 295 3x 26,270 5.1% 1,349 3.9% 1,028 94DCR. Her third dam, sired by Sunset Canyon CF Magnificent-ET, GJPI +11, has an m.e. of 19,382―875―651 on her first record. Her Very Good-83% fourth dam has a best record of 23,710 lbs. milk, 1,130 lbs. fat and 832 lbs. protein at 3-0.

“Viceroy 31654” was consigned by Wickstrom Dairies L.P., Hilmar, Calif.

In all, Sexing Technologies, purchased seven lots for $92,800.

Misty Meadow Dairy, Tillamook, Ore., chose the other $11,600-priced lot, Milksource Gentry Mayhem-ET. The senior calf sired by Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry-ET, GJPI -81, is from a cow family that has earned numerous purple banners over the years. Three of her sisters earned the blue ribbon in the Junior Best Three class at the International Jersey Show in 2018. One of them, a full sister, Milksource Gentry Marriot-ET, was named Junior Champion of the show.

Their dam, Edgebrook Tequila Madison, Excellent-93%, was named Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Spring Show in 2018. She also earned laurels as Grand Champion of the Midwest Jersey Jamboree and Reserve Grand Champion of the Wisconsin State Show in 2016. The next year, she topped the four-year-old class at the International Jersey Show. She made her best record of 19,240 lbs. milk, 986 lbs. fat and 690 lbs. protein at 3-6. Her maternal sister, Ressurections Monet of Edgebrook, Excellent-93%, won the junior two-year-old class at the Iowa State Fair in 2008 and was named Reserve Intermediate Champion of the show the next year.

“Mayhem’s” grandam, Edgebrook Stylemaster Merlot, Excellent-95%, has 18,350 lbs. milk, 709 lbs. fat and 603 lbs. protein at 6-4 and was Reserve Senior Champion of the Minnesota State Fair in 2010. Four of the next five dams are appraised; all are Very Good or Excellent.

Vierra Dairy Farms, Hilmar, Calif., took home the third high seller with a final bid of $11,500. Ehrhardt Casino Sunday sold absentia and with A.I. interest from CRV. The four-month-old daughter of Elliotts Regency Casino-ET, GJPI +129, ranked #1 for in the breed for GJUI on sale day and today has an index of +44.3. She is +2.7 for Type and backed by seven Excellent dams in the U.S. and Canada.

“Sunday’s” deep pedigree includes several show standouts. Her dam, Miss Ehrhardt Mozart Sunshine-ET, is an Excellent-93% daughter of Prairie Harbour Mozart-ET, GJPI +98. In her second lactation at 3-5, she has 22,400 lbs. milk, 1,143 lbs. fat and 790 lbs. protein in 357 days. Her maternal sister, Sunrise Vindication Sunup, Excellent-93%, was Intermediate Champion of the All American Junior Jersey Show and Grand Champion of the Western National Jersey Show in 2017.

Her grandam is appraised Excellent-92%; her third dam is Excellent-93%. The next dam, Jewels Prime Sapphire-ET, Excellent-91%, has an m.e. of 20,898―1,112―793 on her first lactation. She was Reserve Grand Champion of the Maryland State Fair in 2010.

“Sunday’s” fourth dam, Jewels Prime Sapphire-ET, topped the five-year-old class at the Central National Jersey Show in 2008 and was Grand Champion at both the Mid-Atlantic Regional Jersey Show and the Maryland State Fair the same year. She has 24,291 lbs. milk, 1,358 lbs. fat and 818 lbs. protein at 5-4. The next dam, Hollylane Jewel’s Jasmine, EX 94 (CAN), was named All-Canadian Senior Three-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion of the Central National Jersey Show in 2001. She also earned laurels as All American Five-Year-Old.

“Sunday’s” seventh dam, Hollylane N Girl’s Treasure, EX-2E (CAN), stood second in the Royal Canadian Futurity in 1989 and was All-Canadian Four-Year-Old the following year.

Kevin Ehrhardt, Baldwin, Md., consigned “Sunday” to the sale.

Hawarden Jerseys Inc., Weston, Idaho, purchased the fourth high seller, JX Ahlem Tradition Lady 5220 {6}-P, for $10,000. Selling a week past her first birthday, the daughter of JX Generations Tradition {5}-P-Twin, GJPI +152, sold with A.I. interest from ABS Global, CRV, Semex and Urus. She ranks #6 for GJPI among polled females with an index of +183. She has GPTAs of +1,071M, +66F and +53P. From the “Lady” cow family at Ahlem Farms Partnership, Hilmar, Calif., she is backed by seven Very Good dams with top production.

Her dam, Ahlem Nikon Lady 45184-P, Very Good-87%, has a two lactation m.e. average of 20,327―1,103―812 and ranks among the top 1.5% for genetic merit among genotyped cows with a GJPI of +140. Her grandam is a Very Good-88% “Marvel” daughter with an m.e. average of 23,139―1,135―889 on two records. Her third dam, appraised Very Good-88% as well, has three records over 20,000 lbs. milk and a best record of 5-10 305 3x 23,220 5.0% 1,172 3.9% 901 95DCR. Her Very Good-85% fourth dam has 21,800 lbs. milk, 1,158 lbs. fat and 891 lbs. protein at 4-8.

Funds for the Maurice E. Core Jersey Youth Fund were also raised at the All American from items donated by Jersey breeders. A syndicate of Jersey breeders purchased a painting commissioned and donated by Jeff and Alta Mae Core, Salvisa, Ky., in honor of their late uncle, Maury Core, for $17,000. The artwork was created by Gary Sauder, Cloverdale, Calif. Five units of semen for Reich-Dale Vaden-ET, donated by Maryland Pride Jerseys of Watertown, Wis., sold to Troy Longenecker, Annville, Pa., for $550.

Planning for the All American Jersey Sale was carried out by the All American Sale Committee beginning in March. The committee was comprised of chair Mark Gardner of Dayton, Pa., and associate chair Michael Hurst, Waynesville, Ohio, and 20 other volunteers from across the country.
